An off-grid solar system is totally different from a grid-tied solar system. An off-grid solar system MUST be able to supply 100% of your energy needs, whatever the weather. Accordingly, your energy consumption pattern MUST be studied in detail, both for day/sun consumption AND for night/battery consumption. The design of an off-grid solar system is essential. A poorly designed off-grid solar system, even if composed of top quality material, will simply NOT work.
An “off-grid” solar system is a standalone, independent solar system; NOT connected to the national grid. In other terms, it is a fully isolated solar system which can only rely on sun yield from its solar panels to produce energy, and to its battery bank to store the extra energy produced, and make it available at night or when there is not enough sun. Batteries are an essential component of an off-grid solar system.
A “grid-tied” solar system is generally composed of solar panels only, without batteries; all the energy produced by the solar panels is first used for direct and immediate consumption,and all the excess is sent back (aka “exported”) to the national grid. Some electricity providers do accept to pay this electricity they receive, some do not. There are NO batteries in a grid tied system; accordingly all electrical consumption at night MSUT still come from the grid.
